1043Earlier in the summer, Burlington hosted the JDRFI Ride in efforts to bring type-1 diabetes research one step closer to a cure. Now it’s Niagara’s turn to pull the community together and participate in the annual Telus Walk to Cure Diabetes. The walk is this Sunday (Sept. 22/13) at Merritt Island in Welland. Registration begins at noon, and the 5km walk commences at 1pm.

Last year, the Telus Walk to Cure Diabetes raised more than $60,000. It is the hopes of many that we will see a record number of donations this year in support of type-1 diabetes research. More than 300,000 Canadians, 3-5% of which are under the age of 14, live with type-1 diabetes, so this is a massive opportunity to improve the quality of life for many friends, neighbours, and members of the community. Come on out and join 45,000 Canadians eager to achieve this year’s $8-million goal.

Anyone wishing to register in advance or donate to the cause, please visit www.jdrf.ca/walk.

Type 1-Diabetes Information

Type-1 diabetes is a condition where the pancreas is unable to produce insulin for the body, which is the hormone responsible for regulating sugar in the blood. Without insulin, these sugars can build-up instead of being expended as energy. There are many triggers of type-1 diabetes but the exact cause is still unknown. Some common symptoms include:

  • blurred vision
  • decreased mental sharpness
  • extreme thirst and hunger
  • feeling tired
  • frequent need to urinate
  • frequent skin infections
  • weight loss despite having an increased appetite
  • slow-healing wounds

Further research is needed to fully understand this disease, so please show your support this Sunday at the Telus Walk to Cure Diabetes.
